Miss New India

This book was not what I expected. I really thought it was going to be a fluff piece. Instead the story follows Anjali Bose, whose father tries to arrange a marriage for her according to custom. This becomes the trigger for Angie's move from her backwoods city to modern, thriving Bangalore.
Angie has an idea that she will become a call center associate in order to pursue a different kind of life than that of her parents. The descriptions of the culture that has evolved around the youth of India, gives insight to the voice at the other end of that 1-800 number.
I also learned how little I know about India, past or present. One scene will stay with me - when Angie discovers the horrific photos of a bygone era. I never knew.
I felt that the author tried to cram too many things into the story. Despite that, I enjoyed the read.
