90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death & Life

The teaser on the back says “Get a glimpse of Heaven”… and that’s about all you get. If you’re interested in near-death experiences, there are definitely better books out there. I was very disappointed to discover that this author gave only a fifteen page account of his “ninety minutes in heaven”.
As for the content of his visit – I’ve had more elaborate dreams in the seven minutes after hitting the snooze button. The back-slapping and singing is all easily explainable by what was going on around him after the accident. And how are we supposed to believe that a preacher wouldn’t share his experience until years later based on a fear that people would think he was crazy? To me, it sounds more like he escaped from the pain of his recovery by imagining another idealized world and it eventually became real to him.
Is it obvious that I’m a spiritual skeptic? I read books like these in hopes of learning something that will change my mind about a life after death, but I haven’t so far. I would, however, recommend this book for anyone who’s been through a catastrophic physical event. The author survived some of the worst injuries you can imagine and I’m sure there are too many other people out there who need to hear that it is possible to recover.
