I wasn't really sure what to expect from this book when I picked it up. It didn't sound like it would be similar to any of this author's other books, and it isn't. I don't know what I would compare it to as it is different from anything I have read.
The heart of the story boils down to one thing...if you knew the future what would you do to change it? Ia, is a precog, and at a very young age learned what the future would bring it things happened on course. She takes it upon herself to give up all of her dreams and changes herself into someone who can will mold and shape things, so that the horrible things she sees happen won't. To be most effective she enters the military.
What is so interesting about this book is watching Ia watch the future. Every move she makes is done with that in mind. At times she appears cold and calculating, but that is what is needed to be the person who does something like this. I feel sorry for Ia, I think things would go better if she had more people she could talk to about what is going on and what she is doing, she does have a couple, but even with them they don't get to know everything.
I did like the ending for this book. Ia gets all these medals, but it is the one that means the most to her, but not for the reasons that are stated in the ceremony, but more for her own personal war that is going on. I can't wait to read more of Ia's journey!
As a heads up to people reading this one, be aware that it is a slower read. There is so much info you need to get the story, all the space things then all the military things, stick with it it is worth it.
