it was amazing

Varley is one of science fictions tip top writers, lets face it one of his short stories the Barbie Murders is so stand alone that you couldn't ask for more fun and originality. If I remember correctly this was the second of his books that I stumbled across in those pre internet days, and lets face it. It's one of the best time travel stories ever written. As a writer Varley takes you on an unexpected thrill of a journey, complete with many an unsavoury character and more plot twists than a hippy on LSD looking at an Esher painting. Right from the get go it'll grab you and drop you through a trapdoor of time into a world you really don't want to live in. of the people in the story, they are not merely well drawn characters, some of them are quite capable of drawing breath they are that developed.

The trick is that when you finish the book the whole story makes sense too.

Just give it a read and you will love it.
