In the beginning, I am a little afraid of reading a story about sex abuse, that’s unimaginable. But it’s not, it’s a psychological path within a little girl. She’s different to other girls at the same age, she was forced to spend endless time with a monster, a man who lived in his own paranoid. It’s easy to feel the steps Wolfgang Priklopil made to trap Natascha in a mantrap gradually, meanwhile, Natascha was so brave to face the ordeal. No matter talking to the other self or write encourage words in notes, Natascha did a wonderful job to fight against the kidnapper.
Abrasion and bruises are dangerous, but trauma and shadows in one’s heart are something worse. Among Natascha’s several attempt to cry for help and hesitations to escape, her own psychological world is completed. However, it’s human nature to chase freedom. Once something inside of you was deprived, one will eager for that even ten times fervently than before, especially freedom. For freedom, Carmen could burn down a city; for freedom, Natascha could wait for 8 years for the opportunity.
Primo Levi said making quick decision is essential for surviving in his book If This Is a Man, quick decision is one of the most mentioned factors for survivors of holocaust. Yes, it’s the same for Natascha. She lost several chances to cry for help, and opportunities went away because of her hesitations and fear. To escape doesn’t need so many thoughts, instead, to run away is just one second. In the last chapter, I was surprised that she made this decision that quick, and easy. And it turns out that quick decision worth everything.
No matter what other people criticize Natascha, I like her anyway. It’s obvious that she has huge trauma after that, even she was caught in a glittering having intimate moves with LRB (Little Rich Boy) in one of the coolest night club one year after she regained freedom. It’s moving when I read Natascha learned and learned and learned, she wants to catch up with all kinds of knowledge she missed for those miserable years. People may say she went too far away from her life, but she doesn’t deserve to live in her childhood nightmare for the rest of her life. Once regained her identity, she will do her best to be Natascha Kanpusch forever.
