This is the fifth Matthew Scudder mystery I've read in about three weeks, and this is one of the best of the lot. It may be better enjoyed by folks who've read a lot more of the novels in this series than I have, because it feels likes an end-of-series kind of book, and there are a lot of plot elements that come into this story from previous books that are relevant in this one. In addition, a relatively important figure in the lives of one of the core characters dies. The killer whom Scudder and the NYPD are chasing is absolutely brutal and relentless, and so this mystery novel has a really fast pace to it. Highly recommended if you like Lawrence Block.
