The book Blubber is realistic fiction written by Judy Blume. The main characters Jill and Tracy are best friends that are inseparable in Mrs. Minish’s 5th grade class. They love to collect stamps and hang out.
When one of Jill and Tracy’s classmates, Linda who is very shy and doesn’t have many friends, give their report on whales she gets made fun of. She was talking about how whales have blubber and that a flenser is a person who strips the blubber. When a note gets passed around the classroom that said, “Blubber is a good name for her.” Jill starts to laugh during Linda’s report and one of the boys sitting next to her snatched the note off Linda’s desk. Linda gets caught by Mrs. Minish and is almost sent to the principal’s office. The rest of the day was a disaster for Linda. She is always getting called blubber and can’t seem to catch a break.
Halloween is just around the corner and still Jill has no idea what she wants to be. When Jill is over at Tracy’s she gets the perfect idea. She got the idea from Linda’s report. She was going to be a flenser. When all the girls are in the bathroom, two mean girls who started the note, told Jill to strip the blubber, who was Linda. Jill was forced to choose between impressing the popular girls or not embarrassing Linda.
Overall I thought this book was good. It teaches a good lesson on how it feels to get picked on and how one person can change the way you feel just by saying hi. It also teaches people that it’s not ok to pick on other people.
I would recommend this book to people who like to learn about life lessons. It teaches how one girl can help another who is constantly teased.
