Sherlock Holmes meets a teenaged girl, argues with her, and ends up making her an apprentice. The book is not as silly as I'm making it sound in this summary, but it's also not as good as the Amazon reviews claim. The central mystery is not impressive. The novel is entertaining, but overall I preferred Michael Dibdin's The Last Sherlock Holmes Mystery.

I'm amused that a minor character in Beekeeper's is named Jessica Simpson.

I enjoy Laurie R. King's writing style--which is a relief, as I have somehow managed to buy three copies of this novel and at least four copies of other novels she has written. I really should get organized one of these days.

Leslie I loved this book and read the whole 8 book series. I've even passed it around work then boxed it all and sent it to a friend in England.
They are not of consistant quality, but lots of fun.

Kirsti Leslie, is there a book in the series that you believe is especially good? I'm trying to decide whether I want to keep reading or just give these away to someone who would enjoy them more. The next one is A Monstrous Regiment of Women. Love the title, not crazy about the ten-page excerpt I read.

Leslie i was glad to have read the entire series. Some struck me more than others, but seeing how the relationship grew and developed between Mary Russell and Mr. Holmes made it worthwhile not to skip anything.
