Interesting first novel, set in India and the UK. Focusses on a series of lives lived on the margins of society, with two main story lines. One follows a gay student coming to the UK on a scholarship to do a postgraduate degree, and his gradual movement to illegal immigrant status working as a prostitute. The second story line is set in India at the turn of the century. The author links the two, but not entirely convincingly. A thought provoking book with some excellent writing, but a slightly artificial story line.
