The Telling
by Ursula K. Le Guin
Hey Al, I've been wanting to start reading LeGuin for a while (I've read "Catwings," but that doesn't freaking count). Know a good book to start with?

somehow even though it's called 'the telling' i didn't realize this book would be all about language. for me, that's a bonus. i feel sometimes like leguin's stories 'don't go anywhere', but i realize it's really just that they are full of middle. the beginning and end seem almost arbitrary. that is to say, the stories are ongoing, so she picks a place to start and chooses a place to stop. but there is obviously a lot more happening before and after. it's kind of how we tell stories verbally, which is exactly what the telling is about.
