The intersection of historical and personal narrative is difficult to balance but is successful here. Its the historical narrative and the family stories which allows the main character's personal history to be situated in context. Without this context, the story would've been lost or too singular in its focus. With it, the story was enjoyable on so many different levels. An enjoyable read well worth someone's time.
