The Road to Wigan Pier
by George Orwell
by George Orwell
The book is divided unevenly into 4 sections. The first dealing with working conditions in coal mines, working class housing, and mass unemployment. The second dealing with the class system. The third dealing with Socialism. The first was a bit dry, but still interesting, the second felt a little dated to be of value, but still interesting. It was the third part that really did it for me though. Orwell's insights and playing devil's advocate and genuine interest in examination the low acceptance of Socialism plus his understanding of the importance of it being widely accepted before Fascism took too much hold. All really good stuff. Compared with Down and Out in Paris and London and even Homage to Catalonia, Road to Wigan Pier has much more personal political insight. In fact, Down and Out's only real analysis was at the very end of the book, and Homage to Catalonia worked in some interesting lesser-known history and observations, but in Road to Wigan Pier her really lets loose, and is my favorite of the three. Note that Road to Wigan Pier was written right before Orwell set off to fight in the Spanish Civil War, which culminated in Homage to Catalonia.
