Richard Sharpe is an Ensign now and lost as to what he needs to do and what his responsibilities are. The Scottish unit he was assigned to doesn't want him since he's not Scottish and he's also a ranker. Bernard Cornwell outlines the class structure of the British Army very nicely. Sharpe is assigned as an assistant to Captain Torrance who has no interest in doing his dutuy and more in making money from selling the supplies. Sergeant Hakewsill returns with his malevolence. There's fighting to be done though and Sharpe take part in the battle of Argaum and the siege of Gawilghur with Major Dodd leading troops for the Mahratta against the British in both. Cornwell again gives vivid description of battles.
