it was ok

"Submarine" is a coming-of-age story of sorts about a 15 year old Welsh kid, Oliver, who struggles with adolescence, his first girlfriend, and coping with his parents' marital troubles. Parts of the book are quite funny, and I appreciate Oliver's love for language. Dunthorne also captures elements of adolescence very well, like Oliver's preoccupation with sex and his vacillation between acting like a child and like an adult.

The main problem with the book is that Oliver is a very unlikable character. He is self-centered, often unpleasant, and his actions towards his schoolmates, parents, and girlfriend are rather despicable. I did not enjoy spending that much time reading about such a character.
