This is a fascinating biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN extrarodinaire who served in almost every humanitarian and political role for the UN around the world during his too-short lifetime -- from Cambodia, to Serbia, to East Timor, to Iraq. Through Sergio's personal story, complete with the "good, the bad and the ugly" despite her obvious admiration of him, Power also explores the limits of what the UN can accomplish in these times of growing multinational conflicts. Without a consensus among powerful nations, the UN is held back from fulfilling its promise, and it's hard to believe we'll ever achieve that.
