Don't Cry

by Mary Gaitskill
Brilliant. Gaitskill has an amazing ability of creating these hauntingly beautiful characters that are so real. She writes in somewhat of a dark manner, but it still has a sort of charm and lightness. She commands your attention as her words travel to inexplicable depths, possesing the power to create shocking realizations. The story that fascinated me the most was Mirror Ball, which is about a man that (metaphorically) took a girl's soul in what he considered to be a meaningless one night stand. The detail and relatability in each of these characters is enrapturing. Gaitskill covers a broad spectrum of different people and scenarios within these ten stories, ranging from all ages. She really does posess a sort of narrative magic, and I'd highly recommend this to any reader looking for a book written outside of the spectrum of "normal writing". I really enjoyed this book, and I'm planning on reading "Veronica" soon. I hope it lives up to "Don't Cry", because I've definitely placed high expectations on Gaitskill and her writing :)
