I knew even before I got to the middle of this book that I would rate it two stars. In the beginning, when the drowning scene occurs, the story had a chance; the characters were well developed and the details were impervious, and there was a lot of suspense, but Koontz gave most of the story away early on. The character Vassago, who renamed himself after dying, then resuscitated and returned to the living, chose that specific name because it was one of the crowned princes from Hell. Vassago, his hideaway's, anmd his daily activities become monotonous really quickly, and they're a huge chunk of the book. He admires Satan and cannot wait to die in hopes of being the chosen one to do his bidding. Then we find out who Vassago was before he was undead, and hear him recount the events that lead him to become the monster he chose to be, which is an interesting little twist. Hatch and Lindsey Harrison play the part of the good in the story; after survivng the car crash they take advantage of their second chance at live, and even decided to adopt Regina, a disabled orphan with a heart of gold. Usually in the battle between good versus evil we all know who typically wins. Too predictable.
