So I'm really into short stories lately. And "foreign" authors. This book brought the two together...
I had already read the author's book "Sister of my Heart," and you could tell that it was heavily based on one of the stories (with just a few differences...which, honestly, was kind of annoying, since this was also the longest of the stories). I will say that, unlike Jhumpa Lahiri, Divakuni does not develop her characters very well...they all seem to look and act just like each other. In fact, when I would imagine the characters in my head, the only difference, really, would be their ages.
The stories were pretty typical--loveless marraiages, women dealing with living in a male dominated society, women oppressed even when living in America...all of her stories had to deal with one or several of these subjects and, after some time, it did get a little old.
All in all, I guess it was entertaining, but I don't think I'd ever read it again, as I could seriously predict everything that happened in every story. And, even if I predicted incorrectly, the conclusion she came to provided my conclusion and then totally disregarded it (in a very non-closure kind of way).
