I have so enjoyed many of Carey's novels that I forget when I go to start a new one that part of what I love is that they are not easy or simple. As I read this novel, I did wonder: will it be worth effort?
Of course, it was.
The novel is about art, artists, and the art world - and how volatile and emotionally brutal they can be - as well as the "scene" that surrounds art: the critics, hangers-on, and mooches. But, as the subtitle claims, it is really a love story. And, it is in this facet that the novel "pays off," because Carey, both caustic and romantic, hits the highs and lows of love, even between unlovely people, with resonant honesty.
