Schlesinger’s third volume about FDR and the New Deal is a nearly 700-page portrait of the political and social landscape in 1936-1936; the myriad personalities who inhabited the landscape both inside and outside the administration; and every nuance of these various players’ political maneuverings. This comprehensive political biography is wonderfully well-written but impractical for one wanting a more rounded view of Roosevelt’s life. There’s virtually no mention of family or friends. Schlesinger stays very focused!
