I'm about in the middle of Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin and I'm ready to quit. First of all because when I just typed my first sentence here, I realized how sick I am of the words "Greg Mortenson". Half way through the book and the author is still immortalizing him by full name. I'm not a big fan of non-fiction but I've read plenty of third person accounts and don't remember this being so irritating in all of them.

Greg (smile) built schools in the high mountains in Pakistan. Huge endeavor. Wonderful thing to do. He innocently jumped in and pretty much wore himself out before he got to be a corporation with a steady income. My favorite part was him renting a typewriter to send out begging letters -- took him all day to type half a dozen letters. Then someone took pity on him and introduced him to the world of computers. He was thrilled with the 'cut and paste' keys. I get a thrill just thinking about one or two people getting involved and making changes that count. ....However, I found the writing sophmoric and I hate that. The book is two damn long, the discriptions are clumsy & too damn long and the characterization is almost non-existent.

A lot of people really enjoyed this book, so I'm not saying don't bother. It is inspiring and I truly respect the man & what he did. It's a shame it wasn't written well. For me, this book would have been a perfect National Geograpic article -- more pictures; far less words.

Biba I picked this up at the library, because I had heard it was good, but I am completely bored! I decided to look at Good Reads comments to see if I should finish it. It's definitely going back to the library, and you saved me from wasting many hours of my life. Thank you.

Julie I have to agree with you. I bought it because a friend raved about it. I am about 3 chapters in, and now after reading many of the Goodreads reviews feel it is not worth my time to stick it out. Off to Goodwill it goes. Thanks,

رناتا I couldnt agree more with you, I hate the way this book is written and i was so mad at the writer, because I think the story is really worth it and if it was told in a more natural way, it would be a very insightful and compelling read, I think if it was written as a novel it would be one of those reads you cant drop until you're finished!

I encourage people to finish reading it, because there is much to learn from this man and his experiencies in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but I understand it if people decides to drop it after a few pages...

Caitlin agreed. I am having hard time getting through this book. It's so sad because what an amazing story and experience..but the writing is killing me. I'm going to push through it though, because it is an amazing story.

Charity Glad to see it wasn't just me. I was gagging-and I have lived part of his life: Africa, Pakistan, need, etc. There are more astounding stories out there than this one, but this is the flavor of the day.
I'm FREED to put it down now. Thanks!

Maggie This is the 3rd time I've tried to read this... and I'm about to give up. Your review nailed it for me. I'm just... bored with it, to be honest, and I'm shamed to say that as a teacher - an AP Human Geography teacher who studies CULTURE for Pete's sake. But it just feels pedantic to me, and I know it's bound to get better, but I'm just not interested.

Paul Greg Mortenson!

You people who critique this book for the writing and talk about not being able to finish it have lost the forest for the trees. Your posts are doing harm to the book and it's message. Shame on you.

Paul So much for freedom of opinion. I'm going to publish a book on stopping genocide that's actually a rambling of my stream of consciousness using sentences with no verbs and you'll all have to like it or else be forced to live a life a guilt in a treeless forest.

Claire Frances Good thing that I decided to check reviews for this book before trying to complete reading this boring book. I'm on chapter eight now and I suddenly decided to stop reading it. I only heard that it was a good story and bought the book but I haven't enjoyed readig it yet. Thanks for your comment! It helps!

Katharine good one, Paul
