This series came highly recommended to me by a friend, but I was nonetheless expecting something much more dry than stellar (I've read a number of fictional retellings of Bible stories, and unless allegorized, the ones I've come across fall fairly flat). I was pleasantly surprised by the lively (if often deadpan) humor and the depth to which I engaged with the characters—there were times, I think, when I would be as frustrated with Isaac as Rebekah when they were arguing! I felt that he portrayed a female narrator quite convincingly, as well as the male characters. It was also pretty Biblically accurate, more than I'd honestly been expecting (but then, I was unaware of Card's Mormon affiliations until today; though I do have my reservations about that "branch" of Christianity...). I found it quite an engaging book, I would recommend it, and I will likely read the other novels in the series.
