Book 6 in the Jack Ryan series by Tom Clancy. This is a big complicated book - most other writers could have made two or three complete stories from the various plots and sub-plots, but Clancy in a display of his best writing style makes one all encompassing event of it. The various stories have to do with drug pirates captured and the information they provide leading to seizing almost a billion dollars of drug money and other assets around the world; military special operations troops being trained and sent to Colombia to interrupt the drug trade; and (of course) Jack Ryan coming into his own as DDI at CIA and under-covering the illegal operation and the Vice President's plan to let the troops be murdered in Colombia. This is not my favorite story concept in the series, in that I find the War on Drugs to be a futile mistake, but Clancy brings the characters to life and makes it compelling. For people who have seen the movie (the absolute worst movie ever made from a Clancy story) the book will be a surprise, and will cause most people to ask the question, "How does this book get turned into that awful movie?"
