Dork Diaries is definitely similar to the Wimpy Kid series. While the Wimpy Kid books appeals to both boys and girls, I don't know how many boys will want to read the Dork Diaries series. We've had quite a few girls ask for the books, but I don't recall any boys. Nikki Maxwell is starting at a new school and is very nervous so her mother gets her a diary so that she can keep track of her memories. Nikki really wants to be part of the CCP (cute, cool & popular) clique, but after a bad interaction with popular girl, Mackenzie, she knows she'll never be part of the CCPs. She beomes friends with Zoey and Chloe who are both LSA (library shelving assistants) and they have a brief glimpse at popularity when Nikki starts drawing temporary tattoos on the popular kids.
The illustrations are definitely a step above Jeff Kinney's in the Wimpy Kid books. But I don't see how Nikki gets away with drawing the temporary tattoos on all the kids. Don't they worry about ink poisoning? Maybe it's just me.
I will admit, the series has me intrigued and I've checked out the next two books in the series.
