I just re-read this, definitely Murakami's best. It's a surreal mystery set in modern-day Japan, written in Murakami's distinctive style. It takes readers on a disturbing journey into the past for a bit, describing one soldier's experience during Japan's persecution of the Chinese during WWII. The main journey, that of Toru, is set in modern times but with alternate realities. I've attached the Amazon description below, but this book defies categorization. If you like your mysteries all tied up in a neat little bow, though, this is not the book for you. A lot is left open to your interpretation, which makes it a fun book to discuss with others.
