I had more fun reading this book than I did watching the film version. The book doesn't particularly attempt to tackle any complex issues or tweak historical events by way of a unknowingly profound manchild. It's just a silly, folksy story about a dim bulb having wacky adventures. As an example, at one point in the story Forrest, having one way or another gained employment as a professional wrestler, is called upon to grapple with an opponent named The Turd, whose costume can be easily imagined. I guess Robert Zemeckis couldn't find any way to mold that scenario into a wry commentary on America's past. What a shame.

It's pretty slight, but good for a few chuckles.
