** spoiler alert ** I read this book at the normal time in the school required reading. But, unlike most of my classmates, I LOVED this book, despite being skeptical at the start (who CARES about the stupid shell?). The imagery was very real for me. And I was so swept up with the singing and dancing around the camp fire, that I would have killed the Christ character, too. As much as I would like to say I wouldn't have, I would have. It was compelling and dark and mysterious and I would have been right there.

This book and In Dubious Battle are the same for me, though they're vastly different books and authors. In Dubious Battle has the same sort of scene where some men are just looking for blood and have to go kill a dog to satisfy that urge. And I found the scenes from both books fascinating.

I should re-read this book. I've forgotten a lot about it.
