** spoiler alert ** I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. I had seen that it had good reviews and both my mum and sister had read it and said they enjoyed it, so I decided to pick it up. I tend not like stories told in broken grammar or voices in dialects unlike my own as I have more trouble envisioning it (I don't like to translate what I am reading while I am reading. I find it rather annoying. This was one of the reasons I didn't like Huck Finn very much). In Room, however, I didn't find that to be too much of a problem. I found it interesting to hear what Jack's thoughts were and how he felt. It was really cool to see how much of what we know and do is from our surroundings. He had no perception of what went on outside of Room, even if he could watch television. I really liked the voice and the story.

I must say that once the two had escaped I found Ma to be rather annoying. It might be because I have never been through her situation, but I found her behavior quite odd. I know that she had depression, so I don't blame her for that, since she can't change that. I did, however, find it odd that for 5 years all of her life was Jack and once she got out she sort of dropped him like a hot potato, shoving him off to her mother and her stepfather, even though she didn't like them very much. She seemed to get super annoyed with him when he had no idea what was going on around him. I feel like parents tend to want to be with their child while they experience everything for the first time. Ma seemed to have the opposite reaction. She seemed to get annoyed very easily and didn't want to explain anything to him. It was like she just wanted to go back to her original life, but that wasn't really possible. She had Jack. Jack had never left the little room. He had no idea what a shower is, let alone anything else in our modern world. I get that she had just gone through a traumatic time and she wants to experience everything she missed, but I thought she was rather cold towards her son. She seemed really angry also, but not at the people I thought she would be. It was like she had been super polite to Old Nick but once people were trying to help her she turned into a mega cow and wanted everything her way.

Overall, I really liked the book. It was a good read and was very interesting.
