It's not a good sign when less than a week after finishing this novel, I can't remember the title, or the names of the major characters.
Tayari Jones has an interesting concept with this novel: what would it be like to grow up as the child of a "secret" bigamis marriage? What would you want to know about your fathers other family? What would you risk to get to know them? And what would you really be looking for - love? Acceptance? A chance to be first in his affections?
As I said, it's an idea worth exploring. But the novel really doesn't get into these questions in enough depth. There is a lot of setup as the girl grows to her teens. The confrontation is well-done. But there's not enough about what happened next - a quick summary doesnt really do enough justice. While I can accept that life went on, it seems that there should have been more than an epilogue.
A decent story, but I would have liked a lot more.
