4 ½ stars - As The Rift Walker begins, Adele is trying to postpone her wedding to the American Clark and stop the men in charge from going forth with plans to wipe out the humans in the north. Meanwhile, Cesare hatches plans of his own concerning the future empress of the Equatorian Empire and humanity, in general. Once Gareth learns of Cesare’s plans, he rushes to help Adele and together they flee Equatoria while Cesare launches an attack against humans. Back in Equatoria, a power struggle ensues and one of the Emperor’s top aides is trying to get Adele removed as heir to the Empire.

I don’t really want to say much about the plot, because anything I say will give away too much, in my opinion. Suffice it to say I really liked this second book in the Vampire Empire trilogy. Adele’s previous experiences with the Greyfriar have made her stronger and more sure of herself; she really comes across as a leader. And Gareth…okay, I admit I’m a little tired of vampires, especially good ones, but I love this guy. He knows, long before she does, what Adele is capable of doing to him and his race and he doesn’t care because he loves her so much. Heroes who are willing to sacrifice literally everything for the women they love can come across as sappy or weak, but not Gareth; he’s tough, strong and protective, but he gives Adele what she needs and doesn’t try and stand in her way; I just love his character and my favorite parts of the book were the ones where they were together.

We learn more about what Adele can do, are introduced to new characters and learn more about some from the first book (I love Anhalt and his loyalty to the princess); but I was hoping to find out more about Mamoru's secret society and exactly what they plan for Adele. There were a few clutch-the-pearls moments and a doozy at the end of the book. I don’t know how this series is going to end, or how Adele and Gareth can possibly end up together (but I’m hoping like hell that they do!), but I can’t wait to read the final book.
