** spoiler alert ** It was alright. The thing that bothered me the most was the character development. It seemed like everyone changed drastically for no clear reason at all. I don't understand Jonathan anymore or why he suddenly turned into a spoiled prince even as he took on a new responsibility selflessly. I didn't like how Alanna immediately went to bed with George after she heard that Jon found a new princess. And she said it wasn't rebound? That it's "what should've happened between us a long time ago"? I'm sorry but that just doesn't fly with me.

I've taken a peek at the ending and realize that I am, for the hundredth time, rooting for the wrong guy in the love triangle again, so that's annoying, but I also wish the romance was handled better. At times it seems all the relationships are more casual than anything else. Why are they sleeping with each other so easily? Is this part of the custom, I wonder, because the setting's supposed to be medieval? Thom also suddenly changed into this Roger 2.0 except without being subtle about it. In the last book he still seemed like a very nice guy. I hope there's an explanation for this.

Katie No guarantee it'll happen for you, of course, but I rooted for the wrong guy when I first read them and now love the way it turned out.

But I do think it's one of those books that's probably better when you read it young. (I can't remember how old I was? I guess I must've been around 14 or 15 because I think the sex would've shocked me if I'd been much younger, haha.)

Cornelia Yeah, it sounds like one of those books for sure. Maybe I would've been okay with it when I read it while I was younger too. I just feel so bad about nitpicking stuff in this series because everyone seems to love it and it seems like everyone's favorite childhood series!

Angel Hahah I have to agree with Katie's comment! It was a childhood series for me as well (and a huge favourite, I've read the series around 4 times now).
Back then the 'intimate' scenes were definitely mind-boggling with a 12/13 year old me. I WAS always a George fan though so can't sympathise with you there.
I think Jonathan was only interested in her because she was a girl who was conveniently... there if you get what I mean. Since he was a prince and all I hardly doubt he'll go looking for prostitutes without everyone hearing about it so Alanna was his next best choice? I never felt there was really love between them though to be honest (but then it has been a while since I've read them!)

Cornelia Well, Jonathan had a lot of ladies fawning over him in court, Alanna pointed this out herself. He could have had anyone far prettier, more feminine, and more ladylike than her. It was hinted that perhaps he went for Alanna just to rebel, but I'm not entirely sold on that either. I just feel the development is weak when it comes to the romance part of the story. It does have that shallow/simple feel of a book geared toward younger readers, though!
