recommended for: newspaper people, hemingway fans, anyone infinitely curious about hunter s. thompson's life
all signs pointed to me liking this book. fear and loathing in las vegas is one of my favorite books of all time. several people whose tastes i greatly respect claim this book as their all-time favorite. like protagonist paul kemp, i worked for a newspaper that constantly seemed in danger of folding (is that all of them these days?). one of my favorite things in life is vacationing in puerto rico (though three hours west of san juan, where most of this book takes place).
with all that in mind, i guess i just expected too much from it. i just could not get that into it. i kept thinking maybe it would start to get good, and it never did for me.
there were a few passages i really enjoyed and read several times before moving forward ("i had several chenaults on mind right then..." though i was not exactly wowed by chenault in general). also, having been to vieques and not seeing any chain restaurants or hotels or whatever it was they were going to do with it, it was ...more
