This was definitely an interesting book. It is a research book about the effect of income inequality on all sorts of different things in society such as violence, mortality rates, health problems, levels of trust, etc. Basically, the research shows that in countries and in US states that have higher levels of income inequality, there are more problems in society - higher prison populations, lower education levels, higher violence, less trust, more health problems, etc. The authors show this effect over a broad range of issues and it is pretty convincing. The authors do have some suggestions on how to make society more equal, but they do not get into too much detail on how to do this. Perhaps because they do not want to be accused of being too liberal in their suggestions. But they do have interesting ideas that if society is more equal then we could actually have a smaller government. It is idealistic but perhaps with work, it could happen. I think this is a very good read.
