Read this to my fourth and second grade daughters and it really got them talking - about the bad behaviors of the girls in the story - and how they could react differently if facing the same set of circumstances. Given all the talk in schools these days of bullies and bullying - the story didn't seem to have the same "punch" as I'm sure it did when it was written in 1974. The language was a bit shocking - but it lead to more discussion - so I think that was good.

I remember many, many girls in my elementary school describing this and other Judy Blume books during book reports - but I have to admit this was the first book of hers that I actually read. I'll likely try others for read-aloud time.

Three stars mostly b/c it seemed a bit out of date. Today's kids (I think) would be much more inclined to handle the bullying if not by themselves - then with a guidance counselor or teacher. Furthermore, the bully (if caught) would likely be suspended - particularly for the underwear incident.
