Vision in White (Bride Quartet, #1)
by Nora Roberts
by Nora Roberts
At the recent RWA convention, the author most other authors named when they wanted to talk about the most successful romance writer today was Nora Roberts. Having not read any of Roberts' books before, I thought it would be wise to check her out and see what all the fuss was about. So I checked VISION IN WHITE out of the library and gave it a read.
Roberts is a strong writer, stylistically; crisp and clear sentences, with the occasional understated metaphor, and strong dialogue. This particular book, though, did not appeal to me personally. Too much description of the work of the heroine (wedding photographer), unappealing setting (upper-class Greenwich CT, where girls all love to relieve their stress by shopping at Nordstroms), and catty-women-as-villains secondary characters. The central problem of the romance -- that the way one's parents modeled (or failed to model, in this case) adult love relationships can have a huge negative impact on one's own adult attempts at romance -- is an intriguing one, but one that in this book has a rather shallow solution.
Perhaps a different series by Roberts will prove of more interest?
