The ambivalence of a young U.S. soldier while confronting his duty in the midst of the annexation of Mexican territories to the U.S.A. was very well narrated in this historical novel.
I enjoyed how the author handled time, and became quizzical about the main character's apparent neurological symptoms that appeared coinciding with his loyalty debate.
The initial inclusion of dialogues in Spanish sent me warning signs; though, I finally decided -- maybe wrongly -- that the Mexican population in New Mexico was already speaking Spanish with a U.S. twist.
The book had an almost flawless edition, which added to the pleasure of reading.
