The story flips between 1919 and 1934 with the aid of a clairvoyant who tells stories to Abigale about a time when her father lived in this town, Manifest, where she has been sent "for a while" until he is done working on the railroad. The time is the depression but the need outside is far less than Abigale's need inside to know who her distanced father was and why she is there in Manifest.
Abigale finds a hidden box with various items, a fishing lure, a coin, and a letter referring to the Rattler, a spy, during war time. Abigale and her two new friends are on a mission to find out who the Rattler was. Miss Sadie feeds Adeline stories of the Manifest's past....after all, the saying goes "Manifest, a town with a history." Most of the stories involve a young man named jinx, who comes to this town running from the belief that he killed a man while he was traveling with his swindling and low-down uncle.
Jinx brings new life to the town. With the help of an unlikely town matron he contrives a clever way to quarentine Manifest during a flu outbreak, providing the people time to produce an "elixir" that is guaranteed to cure the flu. Fortunately they make enough money to purchase the land away from a mining tycoon whose aim is to exploit the town, the land and the people of Manifest. Jinx becomes a bit of hero in this town, and low and behold also turns out to be the father Abigale so desperately needs to know about.
But will he come back for her? And why did he leave her?
Like her father, Abigale breaths new life into the characters of Manifest and pursues her quest to be reunited with her father. Maybe he's not really jinxed after all.
