The geographical setting of Annabel seemed pertinent to the story. the remoteness and harshness of Labrador emphasised the struggles of all the characters to come to terms with their realities. Wayne's love of symmetry and bridges and angles also seemed to be in contrast to his own body and the way in which things could not be mathematically explained. I felt that the characters were refreshingly un-cliched. They were not all they seemed - those who appeared strong were actually weak and others were both tougher and more sensitive than they looked.
