Tuck Everlasting
by Natalie Babbitt
by Natalie Babbitt
I loved the story but I hated the ending. This was the first book I was ever mad at. To this day, I still scowl at people that say that immortality is a curse. Perhaps it is, if you're stupid and lacking in any aspirations. If I were the family in this book, I could agree. But no, I'm not... I wish they would just go to college and get some dreams and stop feeling sorry for themselves. If you have the rest of eternity to kick around, do something useful like trying to save the world. If you're going to live forever anyway, you're never really going to have to say you failed, right?

Haha, I'm not sure that the Tucks were in the position to "go to college" when the story begins. Perhaps decades later, when the story ends they may.
Actually I think that the Tucks in there present state were incapable of any growth or learning (like rocks). Yes, it would be awesome to live forever if we could spend that time learning and experiencing new things, but I believe that even their brains couldn't change or form new wrinkles. This is why it was such a tragedy to have a child drink the water, they would remain immature and ignorant forever.
Immortality in and of itself may or may not be a blessing... But spending eternity as a 13 year old?! I kinda think that would suck. I'm so glad that part of my life is over and done with... ;)
Immortality is a curse because you watch everyone you love who isn't immortal die around you. I think since they are pretty old already, it would be pretty hard to go to college or something. It would be strange if they found old records from hundreds of years ago under the same name, birth date, and even with the same appearance.
On immortality: How about when the sun has gone supernova and you just spend eternity hurtling through the universe? Not for me!
I agree. The ending isn't that good. And if I could live forever, well more time to follow my dreams, right? Sure, some people could get suspicious, but there's no point just feeling sorry for yourself. Life is life. Some people that saw I was reading this book for class said they hated it, others said they loved it. I can't really decide. Most books I read, I love. This one isn't that great =( Really good descriptive writing, though =)
"If you're going to live forever anyway, you're never really going to have to say you failed, right?" That's the first take on forever huh lol. Perhaps if you lived forever you could never say you succeeded too. Why be anything or do anything, if forever is forever... unending means it's all microscopic dots on an endless roll of tape, would you find them? That's the crux of the novel, if you digest it (one way).
That's an interesting take on it, Lisa Hillan, and I like that point of view. It's not like the movie Groundhog Day where you stay the same age, and experience the same day, but can grow and learn. They drank the water to stay as they are, not necessarily to just stay ageless.
I understood the ending- but it did make me sad. I wish it had ended a little different. But I do understand why the author did that- even though at first I was extremely mad. :)
Well, immortality is a curse when used improperly but when used for the right reasons it can be a great opportunity. I agree when you say if you are going to be around, do as much as possible.
