I’d seen this book and the next two books in this series of three books (Pretties and Specials) but did not know what they were; the covers & titles didn’t appeal to me.
I read this because it was the May 2008 selection for the Goodreads’ YA Book Club, and I was pleasantly surprised.
This is a very good sci-fi book for young adults. The created world and characters are interesting and it’s thought provoking about such subjects as perfection, self esteem & appearance, and questioning authority.

Wow! I really had no idea what these were about and was, quite literally, judging a book by its cover. I just assumed it was teen lit garbage - along the lines of Gossip Girl.

Chandra, It's not high literature but yes, I had that prejudice too, but it is more than teen garbage. ;-)
Well, that's good to know! And, hey, I'm the first person to admit I don't always need or crave high literature ;-)
Me too. I'm happy to read junk sometimes, and this is more than that. It's definitely geared to teens and wasn't one of my very favorite books but I was very pleasantly surprised. I haven't read the sequels yet, and don't know whether or not I will.
