War & Peace, generally considered one of the greatest novels of all time, starts slowly. Book One is substantially about a gathering of aristocrats. So many are introduced that I kept lists and charts of them and their relationships with one another, thinking it would be needed to follow the book. Fortunately, I was wrong. After the ponderous start, the book becomes captivating. Tolstoy's essay on historiography also bears reading.
