** spoiler alert **
OMG, they've killed off Harry Dresden! (Who reappears, incidentally, in Ghost Story, due out July 26, 2011 picking up the instant this book ends.) In Changes,Harry finds out he has a daughter--by former lover Susan Rodriguez--who's just been kidnapped by the Red Court. One at a time, Harry begins to lose pieces of his life--his office (blown up) , his home (burned down) and his beloved blue Beetle (flattened). Even Mr. the cat disappears (escaped from the fire), hopefully to reappear in later books. We find Harry reconnecting with his Sidhe godmother and teaming up with those who love him best (his brother, Thomas; Murphy the cop; protege Molly and an Agnostic Knight of the Cross with a thick Russian accent named Sanya; as well as Susan and her somewhat strange working partner, Martin) to save his little girl. The RC is defeated in a blazing last battle set in Chichen Itza, replete with human sacrifice involving little Maggie. But the RC is eradicated only because Harry sacrifices his humanity and the mother of his child. Add in cameo appearances from Odin(yes, the Norse god) and the King of the Goblins, and a titillating mini-scene in the last pages (leaving breathless anyone who's ever wondered if there would ever be something between Harry and Murphy), mixed with the usual rapid fire banter we've come to expect from a Dresden adventure--not to mention the heart stopping last page! and you've got another winner from Jim Butcher.
