Ok, I never read biographies -- NEVER! So what was up? I could NOT put this down! All I knew about Cleopatra was that she was an Egyptian queen, she'd had affairs with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony and that most likely, being a strong woman, she'd gotten a raw deal in history. I've never seen the Shakespeare play or the Elizabeth Taylor movie, so just how disastrously those affairs went was complete news to me.

There is just so much we can't know about Cleopatra, but Schiff digs into the classics and into what is known about life in the Mediterranean during her reign and tells a compelling story about a strong, smart, independent, and determined woman who didn't play by the rules as written by Rome.
