I really struggled between 2 and 3 stars. I can't deny the beautiful passages that pepper the book, I can't deny the first line as my most favorite first line possibly ever. But I question the fervor that seems to surround this book. I was bored too many times to count. Wanting to skip pages, give up, read the cliff notes...but I kept going. And I really don't know that I made the right decision. How frustrating to read a book you've heard is grand, only to be disappointed!

Pam you're just reading this!? after how many years of working with karen and you're JUST reading this!? tell me what you think....

Jill yea, you know how I am. If people talk up a book too much, I avoid it like the plague b/c it's so built up in my mind, it disappoints.

i mean, it took me until 3 months ago to read Kite Runner!

Pam that's ok, I still haven't gotten to that. but i wasn't thrilled with this one as karen was

I'm with Karen on this one. My lips are sealed, but what Greer does with that first line is really quite phenomenal.

Nancy I'd read it long before whatever book club found it. Loved it.
