Vanessa Munroe is an "informationist"--a person hired by corporations to obtain information. But this assignment is different. She is hired by a wealthy oilman to find out what happened to his adopted daughter who disappeared in Africa while backpacking with two friends. Since Vanessa was born and raised in Africa, the daughter of missionaries, she seems to be the ideal person for the job. However, when Vanessa begins her inquiries in Africa, the assignment turns deadly and she begins to suspect that there is more to the assignment than a missing person investigation.

Many people have compared Vanessa to Stig Larrson's Lisbeth Salander. But for me, Vanessa was a cold and calculating character. Lisbeth had those characteristics too, but she also had a likable side which I couldn't find in Vanessa.

Carol Did you find Vanessa a bit overdone?

Cheryl Yes, I did. She was just too cold a character for me. I tried to like her--even when I read about her "history". But I just could never warm up to her like I did with Salander.

Carol Do you think the author was jumping on the Salander bandwagon or trying to create someone unique? I'm really not certain. Generally, I only use the read-alike or character similarity for reading recommendation but try to rate the book on its own merits. It's hard to describe a book without saying, "if you liked this you might like that".

Cheryl Hi Carol!
I'm not sure if the author was jumping on the Salander bandwagon or not. If not, then it's unfortunate that the book came out so soon after Larsson's series. Yes, I agree with you. I try to judge each book on its own merits too. With this one, I wouldn't have liked Vanessa's character whether Salander's character existed or not. For me personally, Vanessa is just too tough, hard, and unemotional.

Carol Good explanation. I probably will read the sequel and see how it goes...

Cheryl I know, me too--maybe I'm being too hard on Vanessa. I'll give her a second chance! :) After all, she is going to rescue the young drug addict!

Carol Yep!
