I was surprised by how much I liked this book. I generally don't read mysteries, and I'm not a huge fan of the classics, but this was an engaging and enjoyable read. It was rather long and sometimes the descriptions were wordy, but the plot and characters made up for it. The story is told from several different points of view and the author did a great job differentiating those voices. I especially liked the character of Marian, who surprised me with her feminism. I wouldn't have thought a male author writing in the 1850's would be so forward thinking. If you can get past the length and the sometimes overly descriptive writing style, I would recommend this book. There were several times when I couldn't put it down.
