This was a very unique book. The book is set in depression-era America. The main character randomly ends up signing on with a traveling circus. The story is engaging, but the main allure comes from the unusual backdrop. The author seems to have taken pains to research the world of the traveling circus of the era, and the glimpses into that world that the book provides are facinating.
