I would give it a 3.75, I think...

Chris Adrian is a powerful writer. He creates characters and stories that stay with you, and The Great Night is no exception. It is (loosely, in my opinion) based on "A Midsummer Night's Dream," although there are a lot of sections that really aren't. Unless I am not seeing the parallels. That's the problem, for me, with this book - it is very hard to read, because different parts of the story are interwoven so subtly that you have to pay Really Close Attention. And take notes. And go back and look things up. Again. I still don't understand some parts that are clearly meant to be significant - part of the ending being one of them.

Still, he conjured up a place that was vivid, and deeply sad, and beautiful at times, and I'm glad that I read it.
