Perhaps this collection should have been titled, A Flawed World, because the characters and situations present broken promises, unfulfilled love, and a small measure of disappointment. But then again, flaws are inherent in any model, especially the worlds of love, friendship, and life.
This collection is a perfect transition from Chabon's very good first novel (The Mysteries of Pittsburgh) to his exciting roller coaster of a second novel (Wonder Boys). For me, the stories in A Model World start out just ok, and get better the farther you read. One of my favorites is "Smoke," about a baseball player forced into the minors, attending a former teammate's funeral, and struggling with both the loss of his friend and his throwing arm.
The second, and more accomplished part of the collection contains five sequential stories about a son in the midst of his parents' divorce. All of Chabon's stories seem very real and lifelike. His characters are ...more
