I absolutely LOVE the voice Grange gives Mr. Knightley in this book. Of the three Austen hero diaries I've read, this is my favorite. First, I enjoyed the fact that Knightley had a hard time realizing he was in love with Emma -- in fact, one of his friends has to point it out to him more than once before he realizes the truth of it all. Second, it introduces new characters while remaining true to the characters from the original novel -- and all of Knightley's opinions on these characters seem accurate to what we're familiar with. Finally, Miss Bates ends up happy. I have read two novels based off Austen's Emma; I find it very endearing that both authors found it necessary to develop a kind suitor for Miss Bates, who is definitely a character who deserves happiness.
